The Ultra-Compact DSP Solution

UC1394a-1 Multi-Chip Module

The ultra-compact UC1394a-1 is the first in a series of ready to use embedded FireWire peripheral interface devices for integrating digital hardware designs, such as cameras, sensors, and other embedded resources, within a high performance FireWire networking environment.

The ultra-compact UC1394a-1 is an embedded DSP multi-chip module (MCM) which takes the form of a 116 pin PLCC surface mount (SMT) device. It measures only 30mm x 36mm, but combines all of the resources necessary to interface and control just about any hardware peripheral.

UC1394a-1

On-board DSP, FPGA and a wide variety of serial, analog, and configurable digital I/O resources provide the developer provide the developer with an extensive range of plug & play and software programmable capabilities for IEEE 1394 FireWire connectivity, embedded peripheral control, and signal processing applications.

Key functional resources within the
UC1394a-1 include a TMS320C5509 DSP, a Xilinx Spartan-II 50kGate FPGA, TSB12LV32 Link Layer and TSB41AB2 Physical Layer [IEEE 1394a] controllers. 8MBytes of SDRAM and 512kBytes of FLASH ROM provides a huge amount of program and data storage for the DSP and FPGA.

Two 400MBit/s IEEE 1394a ports are provided, together with a wide variety of universal interfaces to enable integration with a hardware design. These include a 32MByte/s 16-bit wide plug & play data streaming interface, RS-232, USB, McBSP, I2C, JTAG, integral analog to digital conversion for four analog inputs, and user configurable digital I/O. All of the interfaces are accessed via the PLCC pin connectors.

EVM-Kits

The IEEE 1394 Bridging Kit utilizes the UC1394a-1 with ready to use firmware that supplants the need for IEEE 1394 software development or detailed knowledge of IEEE 1394 standards, thus offering system designers a minimum development effort and minimum time to market FireWire design solution.

In cases where the ready-to-use Bridging Kit does not provide the required flexibility, the IEEE 1394 Streaming Development Kit provides the ability to build individual DSP software and FPGA solutions which are capable to solve the specific application needs.

Utilization as a programmable resource provides the developer with a uniquely flexible embedded processing and connectivity solution, capable of supporting application specific configurations. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for the DSP are provided for use with Texas Instruments DSP Development tools, supporting General FireWire utilization and DCAM compliant FireWire camera framecapture.
