The CRep S4/FD 8-channel CAN bus repeater supports both Classical CAN and CAN FD networks, transparently regenerating and retransmitting CAN signals independent of the protocol in use. It enables flexible network topologies, including star and tree configurations as well as stub-line connections.
Key Features
- Protocol transparent 4-channel CAN repeater for CAN FD and Classical CAN
- Low propagation delay with shutdown of erroneous bus segments

- Backed by 25+ years CAN expertise
The DIN rail-mountable CAN repeater CRep S4/FD was developed with signal quality in mind. The use of a Signal Improvement Capability Transceiver (SIC) for the physical CAN interface and split termination enables stable signal transmission and increased immunity to common-mode interference for Classical CAN and CAN FD.
Each of the four CAN channels physically behaves like a single bus node. CRep S4/FD enables the implementation of star network structures. This opens up the possibility to select a network topology, that can help to reduce installation costs.
The ability to isolate permanent dominant segments from the rest of the CAN system after an error time reduces the impact of the most frequently occurring errors on intact bus segments.
CRep S4/FD features split termination with 2 x 60 ohms. If termination isn’t required, the device is offered with high-ohm resistors to ensure that a channel without a connected or unterminated cable cannot interfere with the rest of the network.
The operating voltage is indicated by an LED. Each channel is also assigned an LED to indicate which segment has generated a CAN message.
Baud Rate Settings & Overall Cable Length Restrictions
CRep S4/FD repeaters are available in a number of baud rate configurations. The maximum CAN cable length, which is the distance between the furthest two nodes in the network, is related to the operating baud rate as follows:
| Baud Rate | Maximum Cable Length with single CRep S4 added When a CRep S4 repeater is used, the effect of the propagation delay through the repeater must be included in the cable length calculation. For a CRep S4 repeater, the typical and maximum propagation delays is 130ns and 200ns, respectively. Assuming a 5.5ns/m propagation delay for cable, the maximum propagation delay through the repeater is equivalent to a cable length of roughly 37m (rounding-up). |
| 500kbit/s | 100 – 37 = 63m |
| 250kbit/s | 250 – 37 = 213m |
| 125kbit/s | 500 – 37 = 463m |
| 50kbit/s | 1000 – 37 = 963m |

Layout and Connection
CRep S4/FD includes four CAN segments, wired by terminal blocks with 3 clamps. The power supply of CRep S4/FD is separately wired by a terminal block with 2 clamps.
The following table shows the terminal assignment of the power supply:
| Pin | Name | Function |
| 1 | Power + | Supply voltage |
| 2 | Power – | Ground |
The following table shows the pin assignment of the CAN terminal block:
| Pin | Name | Description |
| 1 | CAN_H | CAN data line (dominant high) |
| 2 | CAN_L | CAN data line (dominant low) |
| 3 | GND | CAN Ground |
Limiting Values
| Parameter | Minimal | Maximal | Unit |
| Storage temperature | -40 | +85 | °C |
| Operating temperature | -20 | +70 | °C |
| Supply voltage | -100 | +35 | V |
Any (also temporary) stress in excess of the limiting values may cause permanent damage on CRep S4/FD and other connected devices. Exposure to limiting conditions for extended periods may affect the reliability and shorten the life cycle of the device.
Nominal Values
